  • Mary Jewell Velo

Memorial services for Mary Jewell Velo will be held Thursday, Aug. 6 at 10 am, at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Home in Lawton, Okla. Burial will follow at the Ft. Sill Post Cemetery.

Mary was born Oct. 21, 1930 in Jacksboro to Jess and Mary Montgomery Herd. She graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1948. She was active in the elementary school band, high school FHA, and Pep Squad. She was also a Girl Scout.

Mary attended Draughon School of Business in Ft. Worth. She was chosen by Dun &Camp; Bradstreet to work at their company because she was the fastest and most correct typist at Draughon School.

During this time, she rented a room from Mary Corbello Singlar in Ft. Worth. Mary Singlar had a nephew in the United States Army, Morris Joe Velo. She admired Mary Jewell so much that she told her nephew he better come home from Japan and meet this girl. And so he did, and a lifelong love affair began. They wrote hundreds of lengthy “sugar report” letters back and forth.

They were married July 25, 1950, in Jacksboro while Joe was home on leave for his father’s funeral. After driving Joe back to California for Japan, she came back to Jacksboro to help her parents at the family Herd Hamburger stand, until she could join him at his next station in Germany.

Following their stay in Germany, they made their home in Lawton while Joe was stationed at Ft. Sill. He later would be stationed in Korea, while Mary stayed home raising two children. She kept busy with her gardening, bowling, and friends. She took coffee to home construction builders on her street. The builders knew if they needed water or a snack they could come to Mary. She knew everyone on the block and helped anyone, even pulling ticks or fleas off neighborhood dogs. She always had a dog or two, and several cats. No cat was a stranger, unless they fought with her own cat.

Mary was a devoted wife and helped Joe with all his interests. She helped him restore numerous antique cars, and later Volkswagons. It wasn’t unusual to see her beautiful legs under a car on the driveway with a tool in hand. They were both members of the Lawton Antique Auto Club, and enjoyed taking the old cars out for a drive around town.

Mary and Joe were members of the Northwest Church of Christ in Lawton and attended faithfully since 1953. Mary volunteered numerous times at the church camp, Camp Lu-Jo Kismif, as a cook. She found it difficult to attend church as she got older and tending to the postal contracts. She enjoyed being part of the non-denominational Women for Christ group.

Raising Iris gardens was a passion, continuing a love of Iris from her parents. She enjoyed gardening alongside Joe. Upon his retirement from the army in 1964, Mary soon helped Joe with his USPS contracts, hauling mail based out of the Lawton Main Post Office. She continued his postal contracts after his death in 1991.

She later received a plaque of appreciation from the Lawton office for her outstanding performance and commitment to the postal service. She continued driving after breaking her upper leg in 2005, and later knee replacements. She could drive the truck as long as someone was with her to load and unload.

Mary enjoyed her grandchildren. She loved how they ran to hug her and enjoyed being with her. She loved seeing her great grandchildren and was proud to know how well her grandkids raised their own children.

Mobile Meals of Lawton became a passion Mary insisted on delivering every Monday. She also started the long tradition of using her mail trucks to transport the yearly USPS food drive donations to the Lawton Food Bank.

Mary Jewell was a jewel to all who knew her. She never yelled or argued. She was kind to everyone. She always had a smile to share. She taught life lessons by stories. For example, if you were driving too fast, she’d share a news report of someone driving so fast their car ended up on top of a building. She taught life lessons by sewing, science experiments or restoring cars.

Each one is taking life step by step. Sometimes its like a jig saw puzzle like in restoring cars. All the pieces may not be there, but by searching, the pieces come together.

Upon the words of her great granddaughter Kaedey, “grandma is restored now and riding around in a VW Bug with grandpa and Morris (their son)”.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Morris Joe Velo, a son, Morris Ray Velo, one brother, Jesse Joy Herd, twin siblings Johnie and Caroline who dies soon after birth, and her parents Jess and Mary Herd.

She is survived by daughter Mary Angelina Randall and husband Clifton Randall of Chattanooga, Okla., three grandsons and their wives, Jason and Callie Randall and their children Cooper and Chloe of Arlington, Justin and Marie Randall and children Kassidy, Kourtney, and Kaedey of Wynnewood and Chattanooga, Okla, and Jarrot and Ashlee Randall of Whitehouse, Texas, two brothers, Claude Herd and wife Orlene, and Gerald Herd and wife Jo, all of Jacksboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lawton Food Bank or to Mobile Meals of Lawton.

Neely Warren Tipton (88) came into the world on Oct. 19, 1931, to Ralph and Leota Tipton in Crafton. He passed peacefully, holding the hand of his loving wife, Lucille, on Sept. 3, in Cundiff.

Neely had a big personality and a wonderfully full life. As a child, he lived with his extended family, including parents, sisters, grandparents, and uncles, on the Tipton (Old Perryman) Ranch on Big Creek in Jack County. When Neely was young, his parents bought the old Lucas Place and other land, and they moved the Tipton Ranch to where it is today in Cundiff. Neely began working on the ranch as a man (he said) when he was ten years old. Neely rode his horse to school in Cundiff as a boy. He graduated from Jacksboro High in 1948, after Cundiff schools consolidated.

After high school, he worked in the oil field as a derrickman. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was deployed to Japan. He attained the rank of sergeant. For college, he attended North Texas, Ranger Junior College, and Midwestern University where he received a BBA in Accounting.

He married his devoted wife, Lucille, on June 1, 1952, in Jermyn, and they started their family. After earning his degree, he became an auditor for the General Accounting Office and the U.S. Department of Energy in Dallas. During his time at the GAO, he traveled extensively in the U.S and to Chile. Throughout his life, Neely worked weekends and holidays at the Tipton Ranch, to which he and his family moved and took over management in 1983.

Once living back in Cundiff, Neely became involved extensively in the Cundiff and Jacksboro communities. Neely held several positions in the Farm Bureau for 36 years. Additionally, he served as treasurer and an usher for the First Methodist Church. Neely was very proud of the Cundiff Cemetery. He served in several positions, including president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer for the Cundiff Cemetery Association. Neely was also on the Jack County Appraisal Board, and he worked with the Jack County Republican party as a delegate and election judge.

Neely’s greatest joy besides time with family and friends was ranching. He continued his family’s ranching heritage with the –O– brand, which is the oldest brand in Jack County. He loved being out with the Hereford cattle and on the ranch. His stories of Jack County and his life will be missed at the family gatherings.

Neely was blessed with a large and raucous family. The Tipton family included his sisters, Peggy and Shirley, many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, along with his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille Damron Tipton, of Cundiff, and his three children, Angelica Viramontes of Pittsburg, CA, Patricia (Tish) and Bryan Smith of Katy, and Robert and Lezlie Tipton of Dallas,. He was Papa to ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

As well as many nieces and nephews.

Art was an adventurous guy. He loved to rodeo in his younger years and even winning the 1980 Texas state champion saddle bronc riding. He loved his family and without a doubt like to tell stories to anyone who would listen. You could find him any Friday night the past few years at the end of the football field waiting for a touch down from the Tigers, so he could blow the horns.

If a cloud was in the sky most of his family could expect a call with a weather report. He even had the little tornado spinner literally like off of the show twister outside. He could be spotted wearing anything Texas Tech, he loved the Raiders. His favorite tv show was Yellowstone and the Cowboy Way, Yancey knew after each episode they would have to break down what went on and decide what was coming up next.

Spending time with his grandkids and watching them play was something he loved most. He had found a church to call home at Christian Missions and did not hesitate to share his love for God on Sundays. Even though he had dibs on the back seat of the church and made sure everyone knew it! (I mean really, do not sit there really) He will tell you that’s “his seat”.

    Sarah Lee Rumage

Sarah Lee Rumage was born Sarah Lee Falkinburg on Dec. 16, 1932 to Ernest Joseph Falkinburg and Willah Wave Marvin. She was the youngest sister to her siblings, Adah Grace Falkinburg McCoy, Edward Falkinburg, Robert Falkinburg, and Joan Falkinburg Swaney. Sarah married the love of her life, Claude McCalister Rumage, Jr. on Nov. 10, 1952. They were happily married until Junior’s death in 2008.

Aunt Sarah, as she was known to many, was a wonderful lady who was full of life. She had a feisty side to her that we all loved. Other words to describe her would be independent, hard working, honest, generous, and, above all, loving. She spent the majority of her childhood in Graham, studied at Texas Tech University, was a longtime bookkeeper for Breech Leatherwood in Jacksboro, owned Norma’s Dress Shop in Jacksboro, worked the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, was a former president of the Jack County Hospital Auxiliary, and worked for her dear friend, Rusty Porter, at City Cash Grocery Store for many years.

She worked at various other locations during her early years in Jacksboro and was involved in many community organizations. She attended First Baptist Church of Jacksboro, and, most of all, was a loving wife to Junior.

Sarah spent a lot of her spare time cooking. She made awesome hot sauce, fudge and cookies. She would often take food to healthcare workers at the hospital, people who were sick, and especially to her friends and family. She was always there for you, whether to share a laugh, a hug, or simply a smile.

Sarah passed away on Sept. 26, and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Junior, and her siblings, Adah Grace, Edward, Robert, and Joan. She is survived by a host of family and friends.

Graveside services were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Jacksboro on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Memorials may be given to Concerned Citizens, 400 East Pine Street, Jacksboro, Texas or First Baptist Church, 200 North Knox Street, Jacksboro, Texas 76458.

Sarah Lee Rumage, you were a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing you!
